Liminality
Victor Turner spent the 1960s among the Ndembu of Zambia, watching boys become men.
The interesting part wasn’t the ceremony at the start or the celebration at the end. It was the weeks between, when the boy had stopped being a boy but had not yet been admitted as a man. The Ndembu had elaborate practices for this stretch — isolation, special clothing, suspended rules, ordeal — because they understood that the threshold itself was what did the work. Turner borrowed the Latin word for the doorway. Limen. Liminality. Betwixt and between, he called the people inside it.The shape repeats outside ritual. The student who has lost the old understanding but not yet acquired the new one is in the liminal phase of a threshold concept — using the language of the field without inhabiting its logic. The grappler between belt promotions, who can no longer rely on white-belt scrambles but doesn’t yet move like a purple. The person who has quit a career but not yet started the next thing. The half-hour between writing the resignation letter and sending it.
These states feel uncomfortable in a particular way. Not painful — unstructured. The old scaffolding is gone and the new scaffolding hasn’t arrived. Most people try to escape liminality by rushing into the next identity, picking the first available shape and pulling it on. The traditional move is the opposite. Stay in it longer, on purpose, until something true forms.

Liminal periods are unusually generative because the ordinary rules are suspended. The initiate can ask questions the role-holder no longer can. The career-changer can see the absurdities that the insider has stopped noticing. Shoshin — beginner’s mind — is partly a deliberate return to liminality after you’ve already crossed, voluntarily standing at a threshold you no longer have to.
The skill is recognizing when you’re in one. Discomfort that feels like no shape — not stuck, not progressing, just suspended — is usually liminal. The wrong response is to force premature closure. The right one is to honor the threshold: lower the commitments, raise the attention, wait for what wants to form. Transformation needs the in-between to do its work, and the in-between cannot be hurried without breaking what it was supposed to make.
