About

Kaelan Richards. CTO at Vizcom, where we build AI design tools for industrial designers — the kind meant to think with the designer, not for them. Most of my day is spent on the question of what an AI collaborator should do alongside someone making something, and what it should leave alone.

Before Vizcom I worked on graphics, rendering, and creative tools. The throughline has always been the same: software that augments craft instead of replacing it.

Lately

  • Writing about classical virtues — solitude, reverence, hospitality, sabbath, equanimity, teshuvah. Words that feel slightly embarrassing to use sincerely, which is part of why I'm using them.
  • Working through longer pieces on bicycle maintenance, the art of description, and what a real reading practice actually looks like in 2026.
  • Thinking about what comes after Figma — collaborative tools, CRDTs, the parts of design software that haven't been seriously rethought in fifteen years.

Cats

Two of them live with me: Bam Bam (grey, opinionated) and Drago (tan, schemer). They wander the bottom-left of this site. Move your cursor near them and the closest one will come investigate. Click near the ground and you can leave them a treat.
