Carl Sagan

Carl Sagan (1934–1996) was an astronomer, but his public role was as science’s translator. Cosmos reached hundreds of millions. His gift was emotional range: awe without gullibility, skepticism without sneer.

In The Demon-Haunted World, he offers a “baloney detection kit” — tools for evaluating claims — while keeping the tone invitational rather than gatekeeping. He separates what we know from what we suspect from what would change our minds.

His posture removes status threat. The reader feels safe rather than judged. You can ask basic questions without embarrassment.
